The Legend of Vox Machina

Prime Video

Season 4 Episode 1

One Year Later

Doty, take this down. I, Taryon Darrginton, inventor and bestselling autor, have met the most bewildering group of mercenaries in Exandria. A tall brooding one, a short angry one, and far too many pointy ears. They Seem…promising?

It’s been a year since the adventurers that makeup the team of Vox Machina saved the world from the dragons of the Chroma Conclave and while some have thrived in the relative peace, some are struggling to find purpose as the first episode opens with a musical number from Grog (Travis Willingham) with commentary from a drunk and increasingly dour Pike (Ashley Johnson).

As the song ends and the duo laments the lack of action, they are interrupted by the violent introduction of a new character named Taryon Darrington voiced by Wayne Brady. The character is obviously out of his depth and Brady plays him with a buffoonish charm that instantly makes you like him much the way Grog seems to in their first moments together.

Ashley Johnson does a great job with Pike in portraying the issues the character faces in the wake of saving the world and not only looking for purpose but also dealing with he own issues involving her waning faith which was touched on last season. Willingham’s Grog reacts by trying to break her out of her melancholy with the promise of adventure that Taryon represents and their adventure takes a dark and dramatic turn as the person they are chasing has a personal connection to Pike.

The other half of the story focuses on Percy (Taliesin Jaffe) continuing his experiments with the anti-magic orb left under his home city of Whitestone by the Briarwoods and his relentless need to understand it. His desire to understand it leads to him forgetting certain aspects of his station as a lord of Whitestone. Something Vex’ahlia (Laura Bailey) is annoyed by as she goes from hunting dangerous creatures to hosting dinner parties as a noble.

The chemistry between Jaffe’s Percy and Bailey’s Vex is insane in this episode and I loved every moment of them together. Bailey’s Vex is supernaturally charming with every line delivery, Jaffe’s Percy is both sweet and dashing and you want more moments between the characters as their love story unfolds. They are both relentlessly fun to watch together.

The action is amazing and the episode has a perfect ability to ramp up that action along with the tension and mystery of the story. There are no wasted moments in this episode and each moment builds on the last until it reaches a cliffhanger that makes me excited to see what these characters do next and what the growing mystery at the heart of the season has in store for them.
