The Legend of Vox Machina
Prime Video
Season 4 Episode 9
The Temple of Truth
Doty, take this down. Things are getting serious. Everyone is quieter than usual, which for this group is saying something.

Vox Machina continues to track the Dark Bard they fought in the previous episode. Vax is getting worse. Grog is worried about Pike and the team finds something dark in the desert. Something that will force them to both plan and act. Delilah and her minions arrive and Vex realizes something about the orb and what it does.

Percy and Taryon put their heads together and come up with a plan that might take out Delilah and her followers, but it is risky considering the anti-magic field the orb gives off. It’s also a plan that requires them to get close and that is even more dangerous as Vax’s condition begins to make him a liability to the plan. I really love the tension throughout this episode and how each part of the team works together.

I also really love the complications they bring to the mission as well with Vax’s illness, Taryon’s bravado and Pike’s simmering rage all being factors that are detrimental to the plan succeeding. There is a scene between Taryon and Percy that I really enjoyed where you see a softer side of Percy as he finds a way to help motivate Taryon in a way that he knows will work. It’s a great way to show Percy’s growth in personality and empathy.

Grog tries to confront Pike about Wilhand as the plan begins to fall apart beneath the temple. Another epic battles ensues and it is another visually exciting feast for the eyes. Both parts of it are exciting both in how beautifully animated they are but also how emotional they become.

Emotion is definitely at the heart of this episode as events lead to a devastating loss that I was not expecting. A loss that throws everything into chaos and changes the dynamic of everything that comes after it. I have been shocked multiple times by the unexpected directions this series will take in relation to the actual play it is based on, but this episode shocked me in ways I was not prepared for.
I like to think that after years of consuming media that I am relatively immune to certain moments, but the one at the end of this episode hit me right in the feelings. I don’t know what to think about what comes next and I love the feeling of uncertainty that this episode left me with.
