Let the End Begin

Doty, take this down. I’d like the record to show that I, Taryon Darrington, did not run. Doty, hold my things.

Pike is put into the worse position imaginable for someone whose faith has been tried and tested and Gideon gives her very few options of what she can do while tempting her with something that is almost impossible to refuse.

The rest of Vox Machina has made their way to Thar Amphala and Vax discovers that his condition has a purpose as it activates something within him to help him not only find Pike but also fight the minions of the Whispered One that the team encounters in an epic chase to rescue Vex. I love that entire sequence and how beautifully it is animated. The highlight is definitely Vax embracing his power and using it.

Gideon begins to lose control of his followers when one of them goes down. Pike is forced to make her decision when it comes to giving herself over to the Whispered One’s plan as her friends fly to her rescue. I love the moment between Keyleth and Vax as she continues to fight for the man she loves despite his mission and position as the champion of the Matron of Ravens. It is both sweet and sad as it echoes the darker themes of loss throughout this season.

An epic battle begins between Vox Machina and the forces of the Whispered One and another member of the team goes down in epic fashion as Gideon begins his ritual. As the battle rages, the team fights against the minions sent after them in an extremely clever trap that gives Vax the opportunity to find Pike and try to get her back.

I love the imagery of the ascension ritual and how brutally metal everything in these moments looks including the music used during the battle. There is a brilliant level of tension and suspense throughout this episode and everything leads to an unexpected but not unsurprising showdown that lays bare Pike’s emotional turmoil not only with her missing faith, but also in Vox Machina itself.

This episode is wall to wall action and adventure as the team races the clock to stop the Whispered One and rescue their friend. All of the character paths have been leading to this moment and the episode handles all of those moments brilliantly with both emotional and psychological upheaval. I love this episode and where its cliffhanger leaves the group and especially Pike.
