It’s coming to the end of the year and since I primarily read and review comics, I figured I would go over some of my favorite comics that premiered in 2025. While there are some great ongoing series that I loved and continue to love, this list is about new comics that began in 2025.

Ultimate Wolverine

Marvel Comics

First Issue January 15, 2025

Current Issues 12

Written by Chris Condon

Art by Alessandro Cappuccio

The Ultimate universe is one created by a villain known as the Maker. This twisted version of Reed Richards has manipulated this world in the multiverse to not only prevent the rise of heroes, but also to consolidate power through vassals placed in key locations throughout the world. Locations that have given them immense power and influence.

Ultimate Wolverine finds mutants not only persecuted for their existence, but persecuted and subjugated by fellow mutants Colossus and Magik who rule Russia with an iron fist. Logan is a member of the resistance with other mutants and humans and this series finds him captured, tortured and manipulated into becoming their Winter Soldier, a mindless killing machine sent to kill anyone who resists.

What I love about this series is Logan’s journey has some great parallels to his previous journeys in the main Marvel universe. Being captured and manipulated are states that Wolverine has always fought against and this series takes those states to some dark and dangerous places for the character and Logan’s fight to regain his mind and will are brilliantly intense.

Bug Wars

Image Comics

First Issue February 12, 2025

Current Issues 6

Written by Jason Aaron

Art by Mahmud Asrar

Slade Slaymaker and his family move to Alabama to the home his father died in. After finding a mysterious item among his father’s things, he is transported into a vast kingdom right in his own backyard. A kingdom ruled by insect factions that have a connection to the death of Slade’s father. As he makes his way through the unseen world and learns more about the object, his father and the new power he wields, he also deals with a growing plot to hunt his older brother who plays to exterminate every bug he sees.

Aaron and Asrar craft a wonderfully rich and entertaining dark fantasy in this series. There is amazing world building throughout the series and some darkly funny moments as Slade navigates an unknown world filled with mystery and adventure trying to understand a power he couldn’t imagine. A truly unique and entertaining series that I hope finds a way to return.

JumpScare

Dark Horse Comics

First Issue February 26, 2025

Current Issues 4

Written by Cullen Bunn

Art by Danny Luckert

Empire City is filled with eldritch horrors and monsters after a strange event broke open reality. In the aftermath, several citizens were transformed into walking nightmares that began attacking civilians. One young woman, Allie, discovered she has powers that are linked to her love of horror movies. Taking to the streets as the vigilante Jumpscare, Allie can conjure any weapon from any horror movie she has ever seen and she uses those weapons to fight monsters and criminals throughout Empire City. Things get personal when she is summoned by her estranged parents and discovers that her sister has been taken by a monstrous gangster and only Jumpscare can rescue her.

A simple premise that is elevated by Bunn through great dialogue, drama and a love of both eldritch horror and horror movies that makes the story thoroughly engaging and entertaining. I loved the self-contained, street level aspects of the story and how Jumpscare balances coming in to her own as a hero while also dealing with the complicated relationship she has with her family. This was a fun limited series that opens the door to a bigger world.

Assorted Crisis Events

Image Comics

First Issue March 12, 2025

Current Issues 7

Written by Deniz Camp

Art by Eric Zawadzki

This anthology series follows several different characters throughout the world dealing with a planet during a time-related crisis. Each issue is unique with characters dealing with shifting through time, finding dead versions of themselves littering the world, being stalked by dinosaurs or finding an alternate reality to escape to when yours catches on fire.

Camp and Zawadzski craft some intense, engaging and intriguing stories in this series and its unique nature makes every issue a surprise and a treat. I like not knowing what to expect when I pick up an issue and that there is an underlying symmetry to the series that I am still figuring out as a reader.

Bitter Root: The Next Movement

Image Comics

First Issue March 26, 2025

Current Issues 5

Written by David F. Walker and Chuck Brown

Art by Sanford Greene

This is the only ongoing series on the list, but this new story arc grabbed my attention from the first issue and kept me engaged throughout. The Sangerye family return for a new adventure set during the tumultuous times of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s and this time not only are their exploits known to the government, but they are sanctioned in their actions to fight the demons infecting everyone around them.

This story brings in a new generation of the family to investigate and stop a threat in the deep south. One that claimed the lives of a bus load of freedom riders and has ties to a local town steeped in hatred. Not only does the story explore a new generation of Sangerye, but also deals with concepts of allyship, prejudice and a growing conspiracy that reaches to the highest levels of power. Walker, Brown and Greene continue to strike the perfect balance between social commentary and blistering action in this series.

We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us

Image Comics

First Issue March 26, 2025

Current Issues 6

Written by Matthew Rosenberg

Art by Stefano Landini

13-year-old Annalise lives on a secluded island with her scientist father and his small army of robots. When the island is attacked, Annalise is rescued by one of the robots after her father is killed. A robot who seems to act eerily like her late father travels with her on her adventures. While on the run, Annalise discovers that her father had several secrets including the fact that he was a member of a shadowy group of international supervillains and that a rogue government spy was hunting him down. Not knowing who to trust or where to go, Annalise decides that seeking revenge on everyone who was connected to her father’s death is a more productive use of her time.

Rosenberg delivers a darkly fun and engaging story in this series. It is filled with mystery, intrigue, secrets, lies and wall to wall action and thrills as Annalise and the robot go from country to country leaving destruction in their wake as she seeks answers about her life. Landini’s art is beautifully detailed and captures the tone and mood of the story perfectly.

I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer

Image Comics

First Issue April 2, 2025

Current Issues 5

Written by Doug Wagner

Art by Daniel Hillyard

Rennie Bethary has been accepted into the most prestigious fashion school in New York City. She manages to impress her instructors with her innovative designs, but no one knows that her inspiration comes from the human flesh she harvests from the people that she kills. Rennie tries to fight her murderous urges through her work, but making new friends brings out those aspects of her personality when their personal problems and a growing conspiracy at her school force her to turn to her other talents.

Wagner always creates something new, interesting and darkly engaging and this series is no different. The character is intriguing in both her motivations and mannerisms and seeing her fight the urge to connect with people and failing while also fighting her urges to kill is fascinating. A fun, entertaining story set in an engaging and compelling world.

Moonshine Bigfoot

Image Comics

First Issue April 16, 2025

Current Issues 4

Written by Mike Marlow and Zach Howard

Art by Steve Ellis

A bigfoot raised in the backwoods of Georgia grows up to race his souped-up muscle car delivering his home brewed moonshine while avoiding the clueless local sheriff, rival racers and a group of inept Bigfoot Hunters determined to get evidence of Moonshine’s existence. With his girlfriend Amethyst at his side, Moonshine finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy when a powerful cabal decides to conduct experiments in his county and Moonshine and his friends wind up having to protect their territory.

This series is just pure fun from start to finish. Part Dukes of Hazzard, part Smokey and the Bandit, Marlow and Howard deliver fun, thrills, chases and a genuinely funny characters in Moonshine as well as his friends. The series leans into every aspect of its absurdity and apologizes for nothing and I can absolutely respect that.

Speed Racer

Mad Cave Studios

First Issue July 30, 2025

Current Issues 5

Written by David Pepose

Art by Davide Tinto

This remake of Tatsuo Yoshida’s classic manga delivers thrills and a new take on the characters. Pepose’s iteration finds Speed as a popular street racer who skirts the law and frequently gets in trouble with it. Pops Racer is a single father raising both Speed and his brother Spritle, but forces outside of the family end up seeping into their world and putting Pops in the hospital. Speed is forced to enter the world of competitive racing where he discovers that the track can be more dangerous than the streets as he goes up against fellow racers and a conspiracy he’s just scratching the surface of.

Pepose crafts thrills throughout every issue and the introduction of familiar characters is handled brilliantly by giving them purpose and agency beyond being side characters. Tinto’s art is beautifully detailed and has the perfect mixture of modern comic visuals and classic manga.

The War

BOOM! Studios

First Issue July 30, 2025

Current Issues 3

Written by Garth Ennis

Art by Becky Cloonan

Originally part of the Hello Darkness series, The War follows a group of friends in New York City who see their fears of global conflict come to devastating life as nuclear war threatens the country. As they scramble to find a way to survive the end of the world, their relationships will be tested as some will live and some will die.

Ennis crafts a darkly haunting story throughout this series. I love that this is a uniquely human story about survival. The characters have no connection to the external events that are affecting them and their conflicts are a response to their own personalities and ideals. Cloonan’s art is beautifully detailed and dark to match the tone of the story and the end of this story made me instantly want more.

Honorable Mentions

Star Trek: The Last Starship

IDW Publishing

First Issue September 24, 2025

Current Issues 3

Written by Jackson Lanzing

Art by Adrian Bonilla

Serving as a prequel to the events of the final seasons of Star Trek: Discovery and taking place after “The Burn”, Starfleet is in shambles, Earth has cut itself off from the rest of the galaxy and former allies turn to old ways. A lone Federation ship attempts to restore the promise of Starfleet with a resurrected James T. Kirk as part of the crew. I like the connections in this storyline a lot especially the inclusion of the Borg Queen/Jurati hybrid last seen in Picard season 2.

Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring

IDW Publishing

First Issue July 9, 2025

Current Issues 4

Written and Drawn by Patrick Horvath

Samantha returns as a young woman obsessed with the disappearance of her brother comes to Woodbrook in search of answers. What she finds is that she is the unwitting pawn in a dark and twisted game created by the town serial killer Samantha. Horvath doesn’t give anything away in the first four issues and ramps up the tension and suspense in each one as you see Monica try to learn more about her brother’s disappearance while sinking deeper into the machinations of the woman that killed him, Samantha. Incredibly tense and thoroughly entertaining.
