A young girl is woken up by a voice in her head warning her of trouble. The trouble comes in the form of an angry mob who is out for the little girl’s blood and the voice is directing her, hopefully, to safety. As she makes her way to an open area and is confronted by one final betrayal, Jean Grey appears and uses her new team to protect the child and get her to safety.
Two months earlier, a woman is being carjacked in New York with her baby still in the car. As the thieves get away, they are stopped by an ear-splitting sound that rocks the vehicle and brings it to a stop. As Wolverine and Honey Badger come on the scene, they realize the sound is coming from the baby himself. They try to comfort the child, but it only makes things worse and Jean must intervene to connect to the baby psychically. After returning the baby to his mother, Jean and her team comfort the mother by letting her know what options they are working on to help her until he is old enough to be trained.
Jean Grey is back and she is dealing with a new world with the same threats and she needs perspective. She decides that she needs to talk to people who know more than she does and her journey takes her all over the world and right to a meeting with Black Panther in Wakanda. As she gathers some of the pre-eminent minds on the planet in one location, she embarks on an interesting experiment designed to try to heal the divisiveness of the world. Later, she calls Nightcrawler and shows her a vision of her idea. An idea that Kurt let’s her know is both beautiful and dangerous. A vision that will require a team to enforce.
Not to spoil anything, but the end of this issue has one of the best twists and reveals I’ve seen in a long time. It calls back to some of the best X-Men stories and I love how this new situation puts an additional conflict onto the field for Jean and her team to overcome. The writing is top-notch and I enjoy how it allows for Jean to be in control. Jean is written as someone with both curiosity and determination and it works really well to show a maturity to the character. I can’t wait to see where this story goes.
