The Rundown: A dark shadow enters the minds of the X-Men and discovers that one of them might be more powerful than he imagined.
As the city prepares for Halloween, the X-Men team in New York find themselves having a restless sleep. Both Scott and Jean dream of past mistakes and devastating losses and the one entity enjoying every moment of their internal torment is Nightmare. With no Sorcerer Supreme available to stop him, Nightmare decides to move through the city until he finds his target, the X-Men. After lipping into Scott and Jean’s dreams, Nightmare decides to take a peak into the dreaming world of Wolverine and discovers the secrets that she hides from everyone, including herself.
Delighting in the chaos within Wolverine’s mind, Nightmare doesn’t notice that he’s not alone and the person with him decides to show him something he wasn’t expecting when he was probing her dreams. When she expels him from their headquarters, Nightmare vows revenge and learns a harsh lesson about how powerful he really is. At the same time, an investigation continues that could devastate the mutant cause.
The Story: Duggan makes an interesting departure from the arcs that have previously been part of this series. The return of Nightmare is interesting, but the story doesn’t really do much besides showcase how powerful Jean is. From the lead up I was expecting the character to at least have some impact on the characters and the story, but it never really got that far. The issue overall was fine, but it doesn’t really add anything to the overarching storyline or any of the characters in the series.
The Art: Javier Pina does an excellent job with the art in the issue. There are some great moments in the dreams of the characters that are visually and thematically interesting.
