The Rundown: A new threat to Krakoa emerges and this one will take a different approach to defeat.
In the Savage Land, one of the farms where the plants Krakoa uses to create the cures the mutants are selling to world is invaded by a small force using the portals themselves. On the island itself, the invasion is not only affecting Krakoa, but all of the telepaths as well including Emma Frost and Jean Grey.
Bringing together a small group of X-Men led by Cyclops, Emma and Sebastian Shaw make their way to the Savage Land and find that the invaders are still there. Taking the threat from a group of elderly women lightly, the group finds themselves outclassed as Emma tells the council they have a new problem to deal with.
The Story: There are so many things about this story that shouldn’t work. Fortunately, they do in some surreal and unusual ways. I am thoroughly impressed with Hickman and his idea to create and introduce this threat to Krakoa in the manner he does. It’s brilliantly plotted and the dialogue is entertaining as hell. I really love the quiet, unseen menace of these women and their plan poses a bigger threat than anything the villains who have faced the mutants so far can muster. I love this issue because it is so delightfully weird and different. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
The Art: Leinil Francis Yu brings this unique and fun story to life with amazing art that is filled with beautiful details both in the characters and the backgrounds. I love the way Yu draws these characters and the power he infuses them with in the visuals. A great looking issue.
