The Rundown: Apocalyspe meets a familiar face on the eve of battle and learns the tragedy of his lost love.
Apocalypse meets with his love Genesis below the Starlight Citadel. As the opposing forces talk, she offers Apocalypse a chance to learn the truth about happened to her after he left. She tells him of the world she and their children built and how they used their strength to defend it. She tells him of their war against Amenth and how warnings of their defeat were ignored.
She tells him of the battle that brought her to the power on Arrako and how betrayal led to the fall of everything they built. She tells him these things so that he knows the truth before they face each other in battle. Before she begins her battle for the things she wants now, Krakoa.
The Story: Jonathan Hickman continues to craft a dense and deep narrative in this issue. There is real emotion in this issue and making it a one on one conversation between Genesis and Apocalypse was the perfect tone to set for this part of the story. The background works really well and gives context to the upcoming battle and its stakes.
The Art: Mahmud Asrar and Leinil Francis Yu bring beautiful backgrounds and dazzling details to the pages of this issue. There is a beautiful brutality to the battles and the contrast between those moments and the pre-war peace of Otherworld was brilliant.
