The Rundown: The goddesses of Olympus begin a bold plan of rebellion against Zeus and man.
The ravages and crimes of man have awakened the anger of the goddesses of Olympus and they will have words with Zeus. As the gods and goddesses stand in opposition, Hera demands that Zeus realize that men have been the biggest problem throughout history. Unsatisfied with his response, the goddesses leave to plan in secret with only Hera not attending. As they contemplate Zeus’ power and Hera’s absence, the goddesses continue their plans without her.
A plan that will require each of them to make an offering of themselves for the sake of the endeavor. In the aftermath, they travel to Earth to begin their rebellion with the creation of the first Amazon. The other goddesses create their own Amazons as well and on Earth they gather in their respective tribes as Athena confronts Hera regarding their plan. On Earth, Hippolyta witnesses the cruelty of men firsthand and it awakens a power within her as she finds herself in the company of her future subjects.
The Story: Kelly Sue DeConnick has crafted a truly epic tale in this first volume. The story is rich in detail, character and complexity. It is a compelling story that is highly engaging. I love the style of the storytelling as well as the beauty of the language. DeConnick brings in the reader and dazzles with great world building, storytelling and emotional stakes. I am in awe of this first volume and cannot wait for the next one.
The Art: Phil Jimenez dazzles with the brilliant design of every page of this issue. There are some truly magnificent visual moments to be found throughout this issue and I was stunned as the story progressed.
