While James Gunn gears up for his debut as a DC Films writer/director, there’s news that his next project will be down a star.
According to an exclusive in Variety, Suicide Star Will Smith is dropping out of the upcoming sequel written and directed by Gunn.
Studio reps and Smith’s camp have not commented on the Variety story, but the trade goes on to say that the decision was mutual and based on scheduling conflicts. Both sides appear to have parted on amicable terms.
It is unclear what the decision means for the upcoming sequel, which the studio was banking on having its two biggest stars Will Smith and Margot Robbie returning as assassin Deadshot and Harley Quinn.
James Gunn is hoping to begin production on the film this Fall and it is scheduled for release August 6, 2021.
