Yesterday we revealed that Netflix and Mike Flanagan have come to a multi-year deal which will bring new anthology shows like The Haunting of Hill House to the streaming service.
Well, Netflix and Flanagan announced the next installment in the “Haunting” universe, The Haunting of Bly Manor.
The original “The Haunting of Hill House” was based on the Shirley Jackson gothic horror novel of the same name and “Bly Manor” looks like it might also have its origins set in literature as well.
In this case, Bly Manor seems to be a reference taken from the gothic horror story The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. The Turn of the Screw is the story of a young governess who is employed to care for two children. The man who hires her is responsible for the children after their parents die and his disinterest in raising them leads him to send the three to live in his country home Bly Manor. While in the manor home, the governess becomes convinced that there are supernatural forces at play all around them as well as secrets the children are keeping from her.
Plot details for the new series are unknown at this time and with Hill House, Flanagan took elements of the Jackson story and updated them to tell his story. So Bly Manor could take place at any place, at any time and could follow a completely different style of story than the James book. Either way, I look forward to seeing what Mike Flanagan and company have envisioned.
