Warner Brothers pictures and New Line Cinema want to take audiences back to the worlds of Middle Earth after making a deal for new Lord of the Rings related content.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Brothers CEO David Zaslav has made a deal with the Embracer Group AB, a Swedish gamin company, who holds the rights to produce LOTR film, gamins, merchandise, theme park attractions and live productions after purchasing the rights from Middle Earth enterprises last year.
Zaslav made the announcement during the Warner Brothers Discovery investor call Thursday. Warner Brothers assured investors of the viability of their franchise properties including LOTR and the company has even taken the step of bringing LOTR director Peter Jackson along with his partners from the films Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens into the loop. Jackson released a statement saying; “Warner Bros. and Embracer have kept us in the loop every step of the way. We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.”
There is currently a Middle Earth production already with Amazon’s Rings of Power series with Amazon retaining the television rights to Tolkien’s universe. It will be interesting to see how the two productions differ in tone, setting and execution. New Line sees the opportunity to explore the bigger world of Tolkien with this new deal releasing a statement saying; “The opportunity to invite fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor, and we are excited to partner with Middle-earth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure.”
