In an exclusive to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Brothers both announces that they are creating a new Scooby-Doo animated feature as well as who will voice the iconic Hanna-Barbera characters.
So far, four actors have already closed deals to appear in the film produced by Chris Columbus, Allison Abbate and Charles Roven. Tony Cervone (Scooby-Doo and KISS: Rock and Roll Mystery) has been tapped to direct the feature.
Frank Welker will voice the title character. Welker has been voicing Scooby-Doo and Mystery Inc leader Fred Jones since 1969. Gina Rodriguez (Annihilation) will voice resident genius Velma. Will Forte (Last Man on Earth) will take on the role of Scooby’s best friend and fellow scaredy-cat Shaggy and Tracy Morgan (The Last O.G.) will take on the role of Captain Caveman.
Captain Caveman is not a member of the Scooby gang, but his inclusion in the cast is based on the plot which will have the Scooby gang joining forces with other members of the Hanna-Barbera universe to save it from Dick Dastardly.
This will be the first time Scooby has been on the big screen since the last live-action Scooby-Doo film Monsters Unleashed in 2004. Unfortunately not everyone is excited for the new project.
Matthew Lillard who played the live action Shaggy in the first Scooby-Doo film as well as Monsters Unleashed took over voicing the character in every subsequent animated adventure ever since. He took to Twitter to express his disappointment.
Well this sucks.
What a crappy way to find out…. thanks Hollywood. You never sense to amaze me. https://t.co/QDdlMAqlrZ— matthew lillard (@MatthewLillard) March 2, 2019
The untitled Scooby-Doo animated feature from Warner Brothers is slated for a May 2020 release date.
