The evacuation begins as Jane watches scores of New Yorkers enter the Sanctum Sanctorum in order to flee the city.
The Dark Elves have run into an issue with taking down a single mortal who seems to have stumbled upon their weakness to iron. Unfortunately for the Dark Elves, the Punisher has a lot of iron and an intervention from Wolverine proves they have a weakness for adamantium as well.
The Avengers continue to take the fight to Malekith, but they fight unaware that there are other forces at work behind the scenes affecting both Doctor Strange’s ability to magically evacuate people and Black Panther’s ability to utilize the transporter at Avengers Mountain.
Just when things start to get dark, Odin emerges with an army of Valkyrie’s at his side. As the warriors get their second wind, they begin to turn the tide of the battle in their favor. When Jane Foster and Blade find the witches blocking Strange’s magic, they leap into action. Unfortunately, the force of the spell not only rescues the civilians, but transports the heroes away as well. It’s a move that leaves the city vulnerable and its final defenders to the mercy of Malekith. Unfortunately for the defenders, Malekith has no mercy.
Jason Aaron has raised the stakes and the bar for event storytelling with this issue. Not only does the story get bigger and more complex, but there are brutal stakes involved and no one is going to leave unaffected. That point is one of the more compelling aspects of this storyline. Even with all the action and adventure involved, Aaron lets the reader know that not everyone is safe. Something that enhances the story for the reader and makes me interested in where this story goes next.
Russell Dauterman delivers some beautiful and powerful art throughout this issue and all of the details, including the bloody conclusion, look amazing.
