The Rundown: A man at the center of a world shattering event finds his life upended by the return of a dangerous evil.
A man takes to the dangerous streets of the city and finds himself attacked by criminals before being rescued by a superhero. Unfortunately, the man named Oliver knows that the hero is a fraud and proceeds to show him the power that he holds.
In the aftermath, Oliver recounts the moment in his past that changed his life forever. A moment filled with loss as the forces of a dark magician named Vanish attempts to tear down the magical walls between worlds forcing Oliver to turn to dark magic to stop him once and for all. Years later, Oliver realizes that the servants of Vanish have returned in new forms and he will have to take a dark one in order to stop them.
The Story: Cates creates an interesting and unexpectedly compelling story in this first issue. The story has some great twists within it and the protagonist Oliver has an engaging past and enough mystery within it to connect with me as a reader. I really like the premise of this story and how Oliver has to take on the role of the bad guy in order to stop the actual ones. I am interested in seeing where this story goes next.
The Art: Stegman delivers some beautifully detailed art in this issue. The action is beautifully drawn and the style creates and enhances the environment of the story.
