The Rundown: Vampirella is having another session with her therapist and her personal life takes some interesting turns.
As she tries to explain who she is and what she is, Vampirella’s therapist still doesn’t believe her. Especially when she tells him about her new role as an enforcer for a Vatican Special Forces unit tasked with stopping supernatural threats.
As she tells him about her latest mission with the gun toting nuns she works with, he seems more interested in her personal life, specifically a budding relationship she’s having issues with. As she talks to him about her personal and professional existence, a face from her recent past continues to pop up wherever she is and she finally gets his name.
The Story: This story continues to be enjoyable in the plot, characters and tone. There is a matter of fact element to the story that both engages the reader and demystifies the Vampirella lore, making it and the character more accessible to new readers as well as fans of the character. There are some great story elements at play in this issue and everything Priest is setting up in the narrative is something I want to see explored going forward. Vampirella’s mission and lack of direction make her interesting to read and it is fun to see circumstances move her forward.
The Art: Ergun Gunduz delivers some amazing art in this issue. The characters look amazing and the tonal shift in the art between Vampirella’s late night activities to her sessions is fantastic.
