The Rundown: In a small hospital in a remote part of Mexico, a researcher and her team will stumble upon a mystery that will change everything they know about the natural world.
Dr. Reyes takes a small team to a local hospital and finds that the infection that everyone around is experiencing is producing some devastating mutations in some of its victims. When the military moves in to work with the science team on a cave exploration that might hold the source of the infection, the team of scientists and soldiers discover that they are not the first people to be in this cave.
When a creature attacks a group of local guerrillas, the team finds themselves trapped underground and the only possible way out is through what used to be a sealed barrier.
The Story: Everything about this first issue is engaging and sparks my curiosity. The characters are established well and the conflict between Reyes and Lieutenant Morris looks like it is going to be one of the more drama filled relationships in this story. Cullen Bunn and Kyle Strahm pull the reader in with an interesting mystery worth exploring.
The Art: Baldemar Rivas handles both the creatures and characters with skill. All of the art looks great and the style gives a fluidity to the panels as the story moves forward.
