The Rundown: The crossroads Devil has a deal to make and he doesn’t need everyone in the group alive to make it.

In order to outsmart the Devil, Ace uses the Anything Engine to start an all-out war with the creatures of the land allowing him and the rest of the group to slip away with the Engine itself. Unfortunately, the device will no longer be sated and wants the song that it was promised. At the same time, the Devil decides that the best way for the group to be brought to heel is to kill one of them and sends his warriors out to do just that.

Ace decides to give the device what it wants and reaches back into his memory to give it something that is unique to his lived experience. Satisfied, the device gives the group what they came for as the Devil’s forces get closer. Valentina uses her superhero knowledge to get the group moving and back to the ship. Unfortunately, the only thing they find waiting for them is betrayal and the Devil wanting to make a new deal.

The Story: Snyder and Soule craft an interesting, entertaining and compelling story in this issue. There are great character moments and I like the way the relationships between them are evolving. There is one moment with Ace in the story that speaks to cultural appropriation that is handled brilliantly and gave me a gut reaction when I saw it. The plot continues to be brilliantly complex and relevant to American society. I also really enjoyed the twist at the end and cannot wait to see where the story goes next.

The Art: Camuncoli and Marcello Grassi deliver some beautiful visuals throughout the issue. There are some awesome action scenes within and the Crossroads Devil moments are visually jarring.
