Scott has to call in some help to begin the next part of his plan and he’ll have to compromise some of his principles to protect the remaining mutants.
Enlisting old friend Val Cooper, Scott offers the services of this new X-Men team to the government on a clandestine basis. In exchange for information, the new team will perform certain tasks that leave the government with plausible deniability.
The lack of mutants forces Scott to compromise in order to increase the ranks. Instead of keeping Dark Beast locked up or end the threat of him once and for all, Scott has him working on something in secret. In exchange for his freedom, he tells the team where they can find the Marauders.
Their hunt brings them to the site of a massacre and Scott calls in a favor. A favor that will have the mutants establish a new home for some of their own and attract the attention of Captain America.
Matthew Rosenberg is stripping the X-Men down to bare bones and it works both for the story and the characters. It’s interesting to see how Cyclops is approaching this new world and what he’s willing to do to protect the remaining mutants he’s taken responsibility for.
The art by Salvador Larroca is gritty, intense and beautiful. An amazing looking issue.
