Doctor Sleep, the sequel to Stephen King’s The Shining is continuing pre-production with the announcement of more cast members joining the adaptation.
Ewan McGregor (Christopher Robin, Star Wars) has already been cast as the adult Danny Torrance and recently Rebecca Ferguson (The Greatest Showman, Mission: Impossible Fallout) has been cast as the movie’s villain Rose the Hat.
Deadline announced two more members of the cast.
According to the Deadline article, actor Carl Lumbly will be taking on the role of Dick Halloran. Halloran, the former cook at the Overlook Hotel, was played originally by Scatman Crothers in the Kubrick adaptation of The Shining. Lumbly is known for his work in series like Alias, voicing Martian Manhunter in the Justice League animated series and most recently Supergirl on The CW. Halloran first introduces young Danny Torrance to the evils of the Overlook and rescues Danny and his mother from the hotel when things turn for the worse with Danny’s father Jack.
Alex Essoe will take on the role of Wendy Torrance, Danny’s mother. Wendy was originally played by Shelley Duvall in the Kubrick version. Essoe can be seen in films like Starry Eyes, Dark Intentions and Midnighters. Wendy is Danny’s protective and devoted mother and in Doctor Sleep, she is the one who calls Dick in when the aftermath of the events at the Overlook become too much for Danny and the visits from the hotel’s “residents” continue.
Mike Flanagan is directing Doctor Sleep from a script by Akiva Goldsman that he rewrote. No release date has been given.
