The Rundown: Maloney tries to evade the Syndicate by seeking aide from the Hayes family
In 1989, Maloney sets the Hayes family up with a new life. The small family then discuss their future. In 1994, Maloney contacts Matko Hayes seeking shelter from the Syndicate. Matko finally agrees as a way to repay him for a previous service. Meanwhile, Julia is visited by members of the Syndicate in search of a missing person. That night, Matko and Julia discuss the situation with Maloney and come to an understanding. Soon, Matko and Maloney meet at an unusual location and something surprising occurs. Finally, in 2140, the Syndicate members return to Helgi’s compound with Maloney.
The Story: Shalvey and McConville’s have created an interesting side story regarding the character Maloney. It is interesting to see how the Syndicate is viewed by the people they relocate and how their lives are merely the means to an end for the group. There is also a fascinating dialogue regarding time travel and its repercussions held by members of the Syndicate that made me think critically about its pros and cons. Overall, I found this episode enjoyable. However, I hope the next issue’s story revolves around the main characters.
The Art: This issue features traditional artwork and muted color work. The detailed attention to character expression and form enhances the story from a visual perspective. There are also some very engaging action sequences. I think the illustrations in this chapter really captures the tone of the story.
