The Rundown: Thor’s first task as Herald of Galactus will pit the new Herald against his new master.
In order to save the galaxy from the disaster to come, Galactus must feed on a series of planets selected by the Silver Surfer. As Thor and Galactus arrive, Thor sees the people of the planet and refuses to allow Galactus to feed on them. A battle between the All-Father and the World Eater rages across the sky and forces the population to attack Thor as the threat they see them both as.
In order to save the people of the planet, Thor calls on his people to step in. With many of them spared, Galactus proceeds to feed. A feeding that is ravenous and destructive. As his hunger is abated, both he and Thor are attacked by someone intent on stopping their rampage; Beta Ray Bill.
The Story: Donny Cates brings the reader right into the action, tragedy and central conflict of Thor becoming a herald of Galactus. This issue is filled with drama and it is executed brilliantly with Thor fighting back and standing up to Galactus despite his role. Cates ramps up the drama in this issue through the conflict as well as the narration. Cates allows for some lighter moments as well on Asgard and those moments balance the heavy drama of the story. A great story with an awesome cliffhanger ending.
The Art: Nic Klein brings some brutal beauty to the art in this issue. Everything from the characters to the gorgeously detailed backgrounds look amazing. I was impressed with how the panels are laid out, especially in the Thor/Galactus fight. A great looking issue throughout.
