The Rundown: Geralt’s search for work and meaning will bring him face to face with a kindred spirit.
Geralt travels the woods outside Poviss looking for monsters and finding none. Short of coin, he heads into town to see if there is any work for him. After being offered a chance to earn money fighting the town’s champion, Geralt decides to leave the area but is stopped by an injured man offering honest work. Geralt decides to take the job fishing off the coast and he hears the tale of how unlucky the fishermen have been in that area after multiple mermaid attacks.
When Geralt is summoned by the mayor of another town to deal with an infestation of creatures attacking children, he abandons the fisherman to get back to the thing that brings him purpose. There is something strange about the creatures and before Geralt can investigate further, he is dismissed. Returning to the town to fulfill his promise to the fisherman, Geralt will discover tragedy in his absence.
The Story: A quiet, contemplative tale from writer Bartosz Sztybor. Geralt is utilized brilliantly and the reader gets a sense of the changing world for the character through the great dialogue and narration. What makes it better is the twist at the end of the story and its meaning throughout. I enjoyed it so much that I was able to connect more to the story and the characters after reading it again. A well done story.
The Art: Amad Mir does an excellent job with the art in the issue. The style and tone of the imagery perfectly matches the tone of the story being told and the darkness of the panels have emotional resonance.
