The Rundown: The truth behind the tragic life of Ian Black is revealed.

Amanda Cross has captured a member of the Sword of God and is determined to get answers. Fortunately for her, the captive decides not only to tell her the truth, but reveal the truth behind Ian Black. A truth that will bring her a different perspective on the man she’s hunting.

Ian’s tragic past is revealed including his inability to transition back into civilian life after his time in the military. A family that inspires him to take on new missions. Missions that will bring him deeper into a group who is turning against humanity itself and will force Ian to do something desperate to save the people he loves.

The Story: I was a huge fan of the first two volumes of this series and Leheup does a fantastic job of fleshing out the character in this return issue. I love the back story and how it personalizes Ian in a way that makes his circumstances more tragic and intense. The story not only keeps the dark tone that compelled me to read it in the first place, but it continues to create a world I want to revisit.

The Art: Fox delivers great art in the issue. I love the change in visual tone as the story visits the past and how that artistic style changes as Ian’s world gets darker and more dangerous.
