The Rundown: A young woman in the past holds a secret forgotten to the history of mutants while Remy learns a dark truth.

In the past, a young black schoolteacher decided to leave Chicago and head to the deep south. As she begins her dangerous trip, she sees the difference in how society sees her kind as well as hints that there are others like her, not just in skin color, but in hidden power. As she keeps her thoughts in her journal and her eyes on the mission she needs to carry out, she discovers that she is being watched by those that can’t be trusted.
In the present, Gambit is called by the dragon he made his deal with and taken to the savage land in order to both hunt and be told information about the Eye of Agamotto that he possesses. At the same time, Deathdream wakes the other students and they begin a dangerous trek into the swamp to a hidden gravesite that contains a familiar journal and a connection to who and what they are.
The Story: Simone continues to craft an engaging and compelling story in this issue. All three storylines add new and exciting elements to the bigger story for both the characters and the history of mutants. I loved many of the subtle elements of Henrietta’s story and how it incorporated the reality of life in those times as a black woman. The story is crafting an interesting mystery that I am intrigued to see unfold.
The Art: Marquez delivers beautifully detailed and visually impressive art throughout the issue. I love the visual style of each part of the story and how each one had its own unique look.
