The Umbrella Academy
Netflix
Season 1 Episode 7
The Day That Was
The previous episodes have started with a slice of life look at one of the Hargreeves siblings. This one starts with the single, unremarkable birth of an ordinary person. His birth does have some drama in that his mother died immediately after and young Harold was raised by his single father.
Unfortunately, Harold’s life with his father is filled with alcoholism and violence. Beaten, but determined, Harold decides that there has to be something special about him. He was born the same day as the Hargreeves children. Maybe he is a missing sibling. When he goes to the Umbrella Academy to ask to be a member, Sir Richard publicly humiliates the boy, sending him off to commit a heinous act at a young age. Harold Jenkins emerges from prison 12 years later with a very familiar face and an obsession with the Umbrella Academy that hasn’t abated.
Upon his release, Harold finds a journal Klaus discards in the trash and begins to learn all about a specific member of the family, Vanya.
Hazel and Cha-Cha each receive separate orders to kill each other, causing Hazel to question his life and decisions. Diego finds out that he’s the main suspect in the murder of Detective Patch and 5, Allison and Diego find out that Harold Jenkins is Vanya’s boyfriend Leonard. Luther finds himself dealing with all the time he wasted in space, causing him to go on a hedonistic bender. Klaus finds himself in the role of protector as Luther indulges.
Leonard takes Vanya to a secluded location to help her focus and work on her budding powers with tragic and violent results. Klaus has an encounter with his father when he temporarily dies and Hazel makes a decision that will change his relationship with Cha-Cha forever.
Things are really heating up for all of the characters as the secrets being revealed either lead to personal destructive behavior in the case of Luther or outward destruction caused by Vanya. The acting is amazing from everyone in the series especially the moments between Hazel and Cha-Cha as well as the reunion between Klaus and his father. Everything is leading to a conclusion whose clues have been laid out throughout this season including the missing member of the family during the apocalypse.
