The Terrifics find themselves ensnared in the forest of eternity. After freeing themselves and the captured Tom Strong, the team discovers that not only can Phantom Girl remain tangible now, but the dark universe energy that has been binding them together has dissipated. With the team free from dying if they are away from each other, Mr. Terrific decides to split up the team and have them enter different alternate realities in order to find Strong’s missing family and friends.
As each team navigates a new and mysterious world, they find members of Strong’s crew including his daughter on a world filled with Mayan robots. Plastic Man finds himself dealing with an animated world almost as ridiculous as he is and Tom and Mr. Terrific find themselves on the outskirts of Gotham City ensnared by something new; Swamp Thing.
I’ve been reading this series from the first issue and while I enjoy it for the most part, this issue really didn’t move much forward for me. It seemed like it was taking baby steps towards a bigger, more interesting story. After all of the build up of both Tom Strong and Doc Dread, this issue just seemed like it was dragging its feet in relation to the bigger stories that make up this arc. While I liked many of the character moments in the issue, I think it bypassed the questions that should have been answered for the sake of dragging out this arc a little more.
The art was great. I loved the colors and style of the art. Other than being visually appealing, the story just didn’t seem to coalesce around anything memorable.
