The Rundown: The long history of the Hyperborean sword is revealed through the tales of those who wield it.
BPRD Agent Howards prepares for a rescue mission with Liz Sherman who gives him a little encouragement before they head out. After heading to upstate New York, Howards finds himself facing something dark and powerful. A warrior named Gall Dennar awakens on a funeral pyre after his village attempts to burn his sleeping body. After seeing a vision of the future, he is challenged for the leadership of his tribe.
In the aftermath of the challenge, Gal Dennar comes to a realization about the power of the sword in his hand. A realization that will force him to leave his tribe and look for the warriors that made it. His long journey will bring a revelation about both the sword and his purpose. A revelation that will bring possible death.
The Story: Mignola and Williams draw the reader in with the first few pages of this issue and don’t let go as the story unfolds across time. The plot is beautifully crafted and takes the reader on an intense and brilliant journey that is engaging and entertaining. I love the twists that the story takes and cannot wait to see how it connects as the story evolves.
The Art: Campbell delivers some brilliant visuals throughout the issue. The story has a wonderful dark tone that the art captures perfectly with every page and panel.
