The Silver Coin #1
Image Comics
Written by Chip Zdarsky
Art and Letters by Michael Walsh
The Rundown: A band on the cusp of breaking through finds unexpected success with a little supernatural help.
Ryan and his friends are talented and that talent is on display at their local bar. Unfortunately, they are relegated to the seven o’ clock show because they are a rock band trying to make it big in the disco era. After another gig takes them nowhere, they decide to sell some of the junk they find in Ryan’s place. Stuff that belonged to his long absent mom including a mysterious silver coin.
After discovering the hidden magic within the coin and how it can help them, Ryan and his band find success. Success starts giving them opportunities. Opportunities that Ryan does not want to pass up. Unfortunately, those opportunities start changes within Ryan that will lead to tragedy.
The Rundown: The Silver Coin has potential. There are some interesting elements to be found in the story and Chip Zdarsky infuses the story with wry humor and wit. Those elements do the most to keep me engaged in a story that was relatively predictable. It’s a fun first issue that could potentially go in some new and interesting directions.
The Art: Walsh does some great work with the art in the issue. There is a dark undercurrent throughout the story and Walsh is able to pick up those moments and bring them to life.
