The Rundown: Edward Grey is called upon to defend the last bastion of life on Earth from a familiar foe.
Hellboy has died saving the world and the world itself is in disarray. At the same time, an old enemy of Hellboy is saved from killing himself by Morgan who takes him to a hidden location where he pledges to help her retake the throne once he is shown that Avalon has survived. As she contemplates, he learns more about Morgan’s past.
On Avalon, Edward Grey is called by the island’s leader Alice. A call that will prompt him to leave his love and travel to the forest to be retained to take on a dangerous mission. A mission that will require him to make a pledge to the land that will grant him new and wondrous power.
The Story: Mignola delivers a solid, engaging story in this first issue. I love the world of Hellboy and this story does a fantastic job of tapping into that world and creating a new and interesting adventure within it with compelling characters and rich lore that drew me in. I found myself fully invested in the world building of this series as well as the characters and the tease of the impending conflict between them. It’s a rich, beautifully compelling story that I need more of.
The Art: Stenbeck scratches my visual itch for returning to the world of Hellboy with amazing art throughout this issue. I love the visual style of everything within this issue.
