The Rundown: Some of the most powerful beings in the world converge for a special event and to prevent a tragedy.
After killing the president to prevent retaliation from Heavy, Etienne decides to pay a visit to Tokyo for Masumi’s art show even though she is extremely powerful, emotionally unstable and he is on the run. A reality he discovers when he gets off the plane and finds himself confronted by a mechanized soldier sent there to kill him.
In the aftermath, Etienne arrives at the art show just in time to meet with some of his powerful companions as Masumi wonders about the critic sent to see the show. Her girlfriend becomes worried when Masumi becomes upset about the critic’s words and none of them, except for Etienne, know how dangerous an upset Masumi can get.
The Story: Gillen continues to create a hauntingly compelling and entertaining story in this issue. The plot is complex, but accessible and I always felt a part of events. There is great suspense throughout the story and moments of tension that I was excited to see play out. All of these characters are complex and interesting in their own ways and their interactions with each other make me excited to see where each of their stories go both together and separately. I find myself invested in these characters a lot and just how powerful and dangerous they continue to be both to the world and each other.
The Art: Wijngaard delivers beautiful, immersive art throughout the issue. I continue to blown away by the different visual styles and how they mold each moment and character.
