Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane took a big risk this year with his live action sci-fi dramedy The Orville and it looks like that risk was worth taking.

According to The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, the freshman series from MacFarlane has been greenlit for a second season on the network.

The series, which debuted in September, has been ranked as Fox’s highest-rated launch since Empire. The show is averaging 2.5 million viewers among 18-49 year olds and has more than 10 million viewers across multiple platforms. Fox Broadcasting Co. Entertainment president Michael Thorn said in a release announcing the pickup.

“Once again Seth has struck a powerful chord with viewers. He has delivered a series full of optimism, drama and his trademark humor. We want to thank him and the rest of the talented cast, as well as the producers and crew, for an incredible first season. We can’t wait to see where The Orville travels in the second.” he said.

The Orville is the first freshman Fox series to receive a renewal order. No word on whether there will be more episodes next season beyond the 13 episodes in the first.
