The Rundown: A young woman recounts the events that changed her entire world forever.
It took one day for everything in Ryan’s world to change, but it all started after a chance meeting with a man named Walter at a bar. After striking up conversation with the enigmatic Walter, the two become friends. As time passes, the friendship facilitates an invitation to a luxurious house on a secluded lake.
After accepting the invitation, Ryan meets the other people she will be sharing the lake house with. An eclectic group of individuals that know each other to a point, but share one thing in common; Walter. When the man himself arrives and the festivities begin in earnest, Ryan realizes something is wrong with the world. Something devastating. Something Walter is not only involved in, but has a direct connection to the reason she was chosen.
The Story: From the beginning of the story to the surprise reveal, there is a level of cool that surrounds and penetrates this story. The plot is incredibly interesting and hooked me right away. The situation the characters find themselves in is intriguing on multiple levels. I am as engaged in the human story as I am in the supernatural elements that brilliantly emerge. James Tynion IV beautifully lays out this story and engaged me every step of the way with both its premise and characters.
The Art: Bueno delivers some beautiful art throughout this issue. Everything has a layer of mystery in it visually and I love the mixture of styles throughout the issue.
