Season 2 Episode 5
Chapter 13: The Jedi
The newest episode of The Mandalorian does not bury the lead when it comes to what fans have been waiting for since Chapter 12. The episode starts with Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) making her presence known on the planet Corvus.
After a brilliantly choreographed opening fight scene, we are treated to not only Tano’s skill and the introduction of the bad guys of the episode, but you get a sense of the style of the episode. If many of the themes and plots of the series are updated Western tropes, than this episode is full on Samurai in its style and execution.
The episode is pretty straightforward and follows the formula that has made the series so entertaining. Mando goes somewhere for one reason, gets roped into a side quest and walks away with a clue or information necessary to move the bigger story along. This episode does a lot of big things in its short run time and everything it does not only reinforces what makes this story and the series resonate with fans.
There are some awesome reveals throughout the episode including the Child’s name and an interesting interlude with Ahsoka where we not only learn the Child’s history, but also get a sense of why his powers work sporadically. The biggest reveal in the episode is Ahsoka’s mission which opens the doors for another huge character to make his debut in the live action universe.
This episode works well because it doesn’t waste time. It hits the ground running and doesn’t let up until its beautifully shot finale. Rosario Dawson is pitch perfect as Ahsoka and conveys the perfect mixture of personal pain and wisdom. Her presence and story screams for more than one appearance and a possible spinoff. The episode is great and it’s going to be interesting to see where the story goes next.
