The Rundown: A Chinese spy finds his latest mission becoming more difficult and more dangerous.
Calvin Low is a spy for the Chinese government. He doesn’t look for government secrets, he recruits others to gather information that could benefit the Chinese government from a financial standpoint. The only problem is, one of his contacts is compromising the mission and Calvin has to put in extra work to protect his mission.
As things become more difficult, Calvin finds himself dealing with some personal issues and unwanted attention from his handlers. To make matters worse, an encounter that ends in violence will get the attention of some dangerous people.
The Story: Pornsak Pichetshote crafts an intriguing and entertaining new take on the spy thriller with a character that is both charming and incredibly interesting. I found myself immersed in the world of this story and with the unique style of espionage on display. I also really enjoyed the buildup of suspense and the dangers Calvin faces both externally and morally. The story does a great job of showing how complicated his life is and how those complications can become dangerous to him. I really enjoyed the vibe and tone of this first issue and look forward to seeing what happens next.
The Art: Dodson is a master at the craft of creating beautiful, visually immersive art and this issue is no different. I loved the character designs as well as the visual, romantic tone of the art.
