The Legend of Vox Machina
Prime Video
Season 3 Episode 8
Siege & Silence
After a devastating loss, Vox Machina must take the fight to Thordak with one less member. They travel across Exandria recruiting allies to face down the Cinder King in his lair. Will the gathered might of the world be enough? Or will Thordak turn Tal’Dorei to ash?
After emotional blow from the end of the last episode, the latest episode of The Legend of Vox Machina shows us the aftermath of a devastating loss for the team on many levels as we get to see how the fledgling party first met Percival de Rolo, but also the pain of having to bring him back to Whitestone and what his presence meant for the city and its people. It’s a tough scene to watch and it is made beautifully meaningful by the performance of Gina Torres as Keeper Yennen.
I don’t want to spoil what happens, but there are so many great moments and acting throughout those scenes that I would be remiss if I didn’t remark on them. Laura Bailey broke my heart in that moment. You could feel a sense of raw emotion and a mixture of pain and regret in her words. It was beautiful to see and leads to a personal revelation from Vax that helps him come to terms with some of his personal baggage with Keyleth as well as remind him of the deal he made. It’s a sweet scene that fans have been waiting for and new fans will look forward to after the rising tension between the pair this season.
Cree Summer returns as Raishan and delivers some devastating news that will motivate Vax to confront his sister in her grief and give her a new reason to fight. A reason that will beautifully connected to the twins’ past. What follows is a great montage of events as the group travels across Tal’Dorei to gather allies for an assault on Emon. The skilled artist who design and animate this series continue to create brilliantly lush and visually engaging vistas that make me giddy with excitement. I also loved seeing the return of some familiar faces, especially Will Friedle and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn as Kashaw and Zahra.
Once again, I cannot compliment the talent of Laura Bailey enough in this episode. She delivers emotional gem after emotional gem as Vex confronts not only her loss and her past, but also the truth behind her relationship with her father. All of that to bring her character to a moment where she has to confront the consequences of her choices when the forces she and the others gather make their assault on Emon. It’s a scene of fantastic tension that ends on an amazing cliffhanger.
This season of The Legend of Vox Machina is going for the emotional throat of the audience with huge action, beautiful animation and amazing, emotional character moments that continue to make me excited and giddy for whatever comes next.
