The Legend of Vox Machina

Season 3 Episode 6

The Coming Storm

Welcome friends, to the Chateau Shorthalt! There’s singing, dancing, and more chicken than you could ever eat. Not enough for you? How about juvenile dragons attacking Whitestone? Or perhaps Raishan betraying Vox Machina?

After five episodes of dangers, thrills and action that took Vox Machina to hell itself, what the team and the viewer absolutely needed was a musical opening from Scanlan as the team is introduced to his magnificent mansion. It is also the perfect way to introduce another iconic moment from the series. One that everyone, me included, have been waiting for! It is brilliantly done and I love the expansion of the dialogue between the characters and the level of maturity thematically, especially with Scanlan.

There are some great and tender moments between Scanlan and Pike that lead to a decision that could cost them everything when they finally return to Whitestone and discover it under attack. This moment is where things take some dramatic and unexpected turns I didn’t expect, but wholly welcome. The next moments raise the stakes for everyone in Vox Machina including their allies as well as tests the fragile truce they sought with Raishan.

Thordak’s children are attacking Whitestone and Vox Machina must immediately jump into action to save the town from multiple young dragons who want nothing more than wanton destruction. It’s a departure from the original campaign that is perfectly reasonable and adds another layer of tension and turmoil to the story. Unleashing these dragons shows the viewers and fans that despite some familiar moments, this season is a new beast entirely and all bets are off.

The defense of Whitestone is beautifully shot with multiple thrilling visual moments. There are some fantastic moments with Cassandra and Percy in the castle and there is a wonderfully dark tone to the entire sequence. The episode is amazing and subverts all of my expectations by drawing me in with light and hope and then delivering a huge gut punch that shows the evolution of the story and how that evolution had to happen to bring more meaning and consequences to the characters and their journey. A brilliantly tense and entertaining episode that lets me know that the first half of this season knew exactly how to capture my interest and imagination as a fan.
