The Frigid Wastes
As Kima is hunted by Vorugal, Allura struggles to stop the beast and save her love. Meanwhile in hell, Pike gambles against a devil for the soul of her friends and the future of the world. Does she have an ace up her sleeve that can save the day?
The fifth episode starts with an interesting flashback that showcases the tension between Kima and Allura before they eventually fell in love. It’s a tension that is appropriately shown as the pair is teamed with the complicated and potentially mess pair of Percy and Vex. Not only does the scene include beautifully animated action as the pair take on a dangerous threat while discovering they really care about each other, but it also serves as a great way to show the viewer how connected Kima and Allura are.
Back in the present, Kima is on the run from the relentless dragon as Allura and the others are determined to find her before it is too late. Allura is starting to lose her cool, but she does a great job of needling the pair about their own relationship. Needling that leads to more complications. At the same time, the rest of the team is running through the depths of hell in order to escape a creature sent to kill them all.
Both parts of the story are jam packed with action and I love the way both parts of the plot ramp up that tension until they finally come together to give me something I really wanted to see, a giant kaiju battle between a dragon and a demon from the hells. It was epic in its scale and violence and I felt like a member of the team wondering who would prevail.
What follows is another action packed and visually thrilling episode that delivers on exactly what was needed for the bigger story and for the evolution of the characters. The episode comes to an end with not only a nail-biting action extravaganza, but also a dark revelation and a comedic reveal. The writing team does a great job of balancing the emotions and action and keeping a tight, effective hold of both. If this season has done anything, it has gotten me pumped to see what happens with these characters.
