The Legend of Vox Machina

Prime Video

Season 3 Episode 3

Vexations

Go to hell, Vox Machina! But stop in Draconia first. Don’t worry – Kima and Allura know someone there who can help. You’ll love her, she’s great. But first, don’t forget romance. Percy has feelings for Vex, Vax has feeling for Keyleth! What could go wrong?

Things continue to get tense for Raishan as she confronts Thordak and his deteriorating mind. As she continues to try to play both sides, her true feelings might be the end of her as Thordak puts out a bounty on the collective heads of Vox Machina. Every dark and ominous word from Thordak makes me both appreciate and miss the genius of Lance Reddick as a performer. He is truly terrifying as Thordak and the animators play up that terror beautifully.

As Vox Machina returns to Whitestone, they rally to decide how they are going to go to hell to retrieve the vestige being kept there. The scene allows for some playful banter as well as flirting from a couple of characters before Allura reveals a possible ally in Draconia who can help them get where they need to go.

There is definitely a different type of tension at play in this episode. A kind of tension that fans of the characters and the actual play have been waiting to see play out. It’s a very intense (putting it very mildly) scene that is intercut with two other characters exploring a moment they shared and the ramifications of their possibly diverging futures and ends with an awkward encounter leading to a comedic discovery. I love the way these scenes play out visually as well as emotionally.

When the team arrives at Draconia, they meet an old friend whose reactions and motivations are an interesting parallel to the relationship tensions at play within the group. Members of the team enter hell and what follows are some of the most beautifully dark and visually satisfying depictions of hell I’ve seen outside of a heavy metal album from the 80’s. The pair left behind find themselves facing betrayal and danger as the episode ends on a thrilling cliffhanger.

Three episodes in and I find myself completely immersed in this world and these characters both in their relationships and the dangers they face. I love how even the slower moments are filled with tension and emotion while the action is visually thrilling and just plain cool to watch.
