The Rundown: A young woman dreams of changing her fate in a fantasy realm of dreams.
Jeannie Warner is trying to navigate her new life as a college freshman and all of the responsibilities and anxieties that come with trying to be both a great student and a young adult. When a viral sensation teases the ability to enter a fantasy world in you dreams, Jeannie is intrigued.
As she tries to navigate her day to day life along with her friend Arno and attempts at a social life, there is another journey beginning in another land where the protector of the land has been killed and their sibling is struggling with their own destiny. A destiny that will intertwine with Jeannie’s with unexpected results.
The Story: Aabria Iyengar is a master at telling stories and I enjoyed every moment of this first issue from the interpersonal conflict to the characters’ very real anxiety. There is an accessible warmth to this character, her aspirations and fears that I connected with as a reader. I also really loved the dual stories playing out both in the real world and the Fade and the tension as both parts of the story build to the final reveal engaged me in a way that makes me excited to see what happens next.
The Art: Mari Costa delivers beautiful art throughout the issue. I love the look and feel of this world and the brilliant visual contrast between the real and the Fade. I look forward to seeing more.
