The Rundown: A new nightmare has emerged from the Dreaming, but he is more than he appears.
Lindy has been having a hard time balancing her academic aspirations with being a single mother and her dissertation has been causing her some vivid and interesting dreams.
When she notices a new figure in her reoccurring dream, she follows him and discovers that he is a nightmare named Ruin who is desperate to escape the Dreaming and then he does, he will discover that not only has his escape come with a cost for Lindy, but also her baby.
The Story: G Willow Wilson brings a new and interesting new character and story to the world of The Dreaming. While Ruin has yet to be fully defined, Wilson has made him a compelling character who has a journey you want to follow. I want to know why he’s considered one of the worst nightmares. I want to know why he was locked away by Morpheus. I want to know what he wants with his freedom and ultimately, I want to know what happens to those he affects. This is a well told story that brings the reader back into the world of The Dreaming with a story that is engaging with characters you want to learn more about.
Lindy’s journey has some nice moments as well, but I found her life as a single mother more compelling than her academic pursuits. Something I hope changes in the next issue because I get the feeling something interesting is there.
The Art: Nick Robles does an excellent job with the art in this first issue. The characters are detailed and dynamic. The backgrounds are filled with life and energy. This is a great looking issue that draws in the reader and matches the tone of the story perfectly.
