The Rundown: Lee tunes in and drops out after meeting a mystery woman who challenges his loyalty to the department.
Lee finds himself deep in the hippie subculture spending time with a woman who seems interested in hearing what he has to say about the state of the culture and why he is there. It doesn’t take long before the drugs start to kick in hard and his perceptions become jumbled. He quickly discovers that their encounter was not accidental and she knows more about him and the Department of Truth than he realizes.
She reveals that she is the same as he is, but her insights and mission are different. As the effects of the drugs continue to take over, Lee demands answers to some big questions, but only gets more conspiracy theories thrown at him. Ultimately, she challenges him both on his mission, his purpose and what he truly wants from the world.
The Story: James Tynion IV takes the reader on an intense and engaging mind trip with this issue. It’s interesting to see Lee in this situation and the existential angst he’s going through. I love how the story challenges the reader with its plotting, point of view and character development. It’s insanely intriguing while also being incredibly smart.
The Art: Sampson delivers some beautifully trippy visuals throughout the issue. The style is perfect for this story and is ass visually jarring and challenging as the story.
