The Rundown: A photographer’s shoot with a black metal band will reveal a dark entity and new power.

Val has traveled overseas enjoy the black metal scene and expand her portfolio beyond the things she does for work. After meeting a few people and hearing about the scene, she decides to hit a bar where bands are playing.

After speaking with several musicians, she convinces one to be part of a photo shoot in a dark forest. A shoot that will have a dark and violent end for Val as well as new and dark power moving through her.

The Story: Azzarello delivers an interesting story in this first issue. It creates an interesting world with an intriguing premise. Unfortunately, it takes way too long to get where it needs to go. With the exception of Val, none of the other characters are particularly interesting and I found myself having to reread moments to remember who they are and why they matter in the context of this story. The story ends on a great cliffhanger that intrigued me and I hope the next issue finds a way of consistently engaging me as a reader.

The Art: Del Rey delivers some great art throughout the issue. I love the dark, moody tone of the art and the final few pages are beautifully ominous.
