The Rundown: Maxine orchestrates a hero/villain face-off, but her plans have some unexpected results.
Maxine decides to use Janine’s absence as a means of solidifying her control over Ben Reilly. After discovering what happened after Janine ran off, Maxie decides to address the board of the Beyond Corporation and begin a new plan using a substance connected to one of Spider-Man’s greatest enemies. A substance that will give birth to a new and extremely dangerous foe, Queen Goblin.
At the same time, Mary Jane decides to take Janine to the Daily Bugle in an attempt to give them the story on Beyond and Ben prepares to find Janine with or without the company’s help. While Ben’s handler starts to put the pieces together during his conversation with Maxine, Queen Goblin makes her explosive and bloody debut over the streets of the city. After going after the Daily Bugle, Ben arrives to save the day and does something no one, especially Maxine, suspects.
The Story: Wells takes this story and Ben Reilly is some new and unexpected places in this issue. The story has a great sense of dramatic flair as characters do the unexpected and I continue to enjoy Maxine as a character. The Queen Goblin part of the story is interesting, but didn’t connect with me as much as what was going on with Ben. I do like how both stories come together and the twist at the end of the issue.
The Art: Dowling delivers some great action throughout the issue. The character moments have a great visual sense of energy, but the action is compelling. Great imagery throughout.
