The Rundown: The Sin Eater returns and Spider-Man is helpless to stop his latest attack.
Count Nefaria and the Lethal Legion descend on the campus of Empire State University to steal a new device that will give the villain immortality. After slaughtering multiple witnesses, Spider-Man intervenes to stop them, but his mind is still on the attack of Overdrive. When Sin Eater arrives, he takes lethal action with Spidey being unable to stop him.
To make things more interesting, the Sin Eater’s attack has not only an unexpected effect on the survivors, but the villains themselves are resurrected and filled with remorse for what they have done. Something that one of Peter’s colleagues finds interesting and could put her in the crosshairs of the Sin Eater.
The Story: Nick Spencer adds a twist to the Sin Eater that is both fascinating and interesting. The new dynamic makes the story more compelling and engaging beyond a villain killing other villains. The results of the Sin Eater’s actions have ramifications that not only challenge Spider-Man, but shed a light on the culture as well. The narration is thoughtful and introspective which both work for the character and the story Spencer is trying to tell. I liked the fact that the story expands beyond Spidey and the ending has me wanting to see what happens next.
The Art: Marcelo Ferriera has a unique visual style that works really well with the tone of this story. There is a darkness and seriousness to it that melds itself well with the plot.
