Cornered in a death trap by a huge, physical representation of the Big Man, Spider-Man must protect J Jonah Jameson as the two try to find a way to escape.
Spidey manages to hold his own for a while, but it’s not enough in the enclosed space and he’s at the mercy of the Big Man mech.
When the pilot of the mechanized menace reveals himself, Jonah realizes that there is a connection between the two of them. A connection that sent someone close to him on a dark path and turned Jonah’s obsession with Spider-Man into his own. An obsession that could cost both of their lives before the end.
The sins of Jameson’s past are a great thing to base a story arc on and Spencer does a great job of making that past have meaning. It’s fun to think about the comedic irony of these characters being friends, but Spencer reminds readers in this arc that besides maligning Spider-Man in the media for years, Jonah actually put effort into multiple attempts to kill Spidey. That isn’t glossed over as the byproduct of one of those attempts comes back to haunt Jameson. There’s real dramatic tension when the villain is revealed and his connection to the philosophy and ideologies of Jameson become his motives to act.
I loved the dialogue in this issue and every character is given some great, dramatic moments especially Jameson.
Ryan Ottley’s art is fluid, exciting and fun. There was dynamic movement on every page and it really complemented the pace of the story Spencer is telling.
