Kurt Wagner is one of the most popular and famous mutants in the world, but even being famous and popular in a perfect world has its problems.
Kurt enjoys privileges that most mutants would die for, but he still remains humble in the face of his fame and does everything that he can to give back to the audience that adores him.
Even if that means attending parties for fans of his movies when he would rather be alone or among friends. The demands of an international movie star still take precedent over his personal desires and he luckily has a great team behind him to keep him on task and on time.
After bringing in a young girl who wasn’t lucky enough to make it to the party on her own, Kurt gets closer to his co-star and friend Meggan and the cracks in Nate’s perfect mutant utopia continue to show. The Cuckoos deal with it as people are disgusted by the fact that they are siblings and when Kurt and Meggan engage in a romantic relationship, Kurt’s guilt over breaking the law will put his career as an actor and X-Man at risk.
Seanan McGuire takes a simple premise and injects it with a lot of emotional layers and intrigue. There are a lot of subversive and interesting elements at play in this issue and both the plot and dialogue are fun to read. The issue puts a spotlight on how fragile and risky Nate’s perfect world is for those living in it. It adds an element of danger for Kurt that I want to see play out over the series.
Juan Frigeri does some amazing art in this issue. All of the characters look amazing and the details are beautiful.
