Superman & Lois
The CW
Season 1 Episode 14
The Eradicator
Morgan Edge continues his father’s mission. A mission to become the Eradicator rather than use it to resurrect Krypton. Back on Earth, the presence of the DOD continues to cause tension in the town and between Lois and Sam. Jordan is spending more time with Sarah and Jon is learning more about weapons building from John Henry Irons. At the same time, Lana and her family might be leaving Smallville for good.
The beginning of the episode pivots the story back to the deterioration of Smallville which was why Clark and family moved to the town. With all of the Morgan Edge schemes out of the way, the town drama seems to be progressing a little too fast and seems like drama for the sake of drama. It makes sense to focus on something while Edge gets his super sun tan, but the drama doesn’t feel organic.
More drama follows during the town hall and Sam is put in the position of having to tell more than he wanted to when Derek Powell’s mother confronts him. Kyle deals with his role in bringing Edge into the town and Leslie Larr is busted out of her prison. The actress who plays Sharon Powell gives the best performance of the episode. Her pain is gripping and I wish there were more moments with her and Lois in the episode.
When Morgan Edge and Leslie make their way to Metropolis, Lois, Superman and John Henry head to stop them. Unfortunately, the tension of that moment is immediately broken when the scene shifts back to family drama with Sarah and her parents. The scene felt so forced I was praying for it to end so that the story could get back on its feet again. Edge can now make Kryptonians at will making Superman and John Henry’s jobs harder. How these new Kryptonians suddenly already know how to use their powers is beyond me, but they do.
The action intensifies and as soon as things get really interesting the episode shifts back to Jon and Jordan drama that I could care less about. It does serve a purpose finally as events take an interesting turn for the characters. For all the unnecessary family drama, the episode does end on an intense and intriguing note when Edge takes someone close to Superman and changes him.
The latest episode of Superman & Lois loses a lot of the momentum the series has been building by not being able to strike a more cohesive balance between family drama and Superman adventure. The family and town drama was weak and it tainted everything else in the episode, but the episode did manage to find some kind of footing in the final act and end on a note that makes me interested in the next episode.
