Superman & Lois
The CW
Season 1 Episode 3
The Perks of Not Being A Wallflower
The demands of being both a father and Superman continue to clash as even the smallest family event has the potential to be interrupted as the family finds out when a simple painting job as a family is interrupted by a crumbling bridge in China. The first scene is well done both special effects wise and in regards to the human drama. It shows how things are changing and evolving for the family as well as what the boys are going to have to deal with in regards to know who their father truly is.
Things continue to change and more things are revealed when Clark talks to his sons about his powers and they a first hand lesson in what they are when his super hearing alerts him to Jordan being bullied and he rushes to the school to intervene. The scene is intense and well done, but it falls apart towards the end when the twins seem unrealistically upset about the prospect of their father spying on them and Clark seems a little too slow on responding. It’s an argument that could have been resolved a lot faster instead of being dragged into another Kent boys storm off session.
Lois has to get used to working for a smaller paper and her reputation doesn’t get her as far as it used to when trying to investigate Morgan Edge. When a woman appears with a connection to one of Edge’s failed enterprises, Lois smells a story. Unfortunately, she doesn’t realize that Edge is watching her and has plans. Things get more intense as Lois’ car is vandalized and she realizes that she is getting close to something.
More family drama ensues when Sarah quits the cheerleading squad her mother Lana coaches and Jordan discovers something that prompts him to try out for the football team and show off some strength to the guys who have been bullying him. What he doesn’t realize is what his presence will do to Jonathan. It was interesting to see Jordan flex in that moment as well as the consequences for Jonathan who seems to be more and more left in the background.
Beyond the family drama, the episode centers on Lois’ investigation into Morgan Edge and her investigation uncovers some interesting super powered threats. One that can go toe to toe with Superman when Lois is forced to call for help to protect a source. The battle between the two is intense and beautifully filmed. It has great cinematic elements to it its resolution is thrilling. As the episode comes to a close, Lois is renewed in her fight to expose Edge and we discover that there is more to Edge’s assistant than meets the eye.
The third episode of Superman & Lois is another great balance of Superman heroics and family drama. While the character of Jordan can be a little too angsty at times, the family balance makes those moments watchable. The new threats added to the show are also great and I can’t wait to see where the show goes next.
