The battle for the legacy of Krypton rages and Superman must brace himself for an unexpected return.
In the midst of the battle inside the Phantom Zone, Superman continues to battle Rogol Zaar. Even with Zod joining the fight, the destroyer of Krypton continues to fight relentlessly. Clark is ready to push the fight to its limits and even makes a desperate push to keep Zod fighting by invoking Kandor without knowing what Zod knows about the broken city.
It’s a desperate gamble and uncharacteristic of Superman, especially when he’s trying to get answers. It also upends everything that happened with Clark’s revelation in the last issue. That’s what I presumed would be resolved in this story, but nothing seems to come of it. Superman and Rogol continue to brawl, Clark continues his introspection until Superman is ripped from the Phantom Zone without getting any answers. Wanting to go back, he is contacted by Martian Manhunter and immediately goes back to start helping people on Earth until he is shaken by a surprise visitor.
Much of the promise of the previous issue was left unfulfilled in this one. There was a setup for something to be revealed about Rogol’s motivations and that was pushed aside for a brawl and Clark’s introspection about letting his two greatest enemies kill each other. The Bendis ends the conflict so abruptly to get to the reveal that I was left wondering why this wasn’t put off until the next issue. The pace of this one was just off from the start and everything seemed rush in a bad way.
Ivan Reis’ art is splendid and I would have loved to see more of it as the fight went on.
